Beaverton Symphony performs Brahms Piano Concerto #2

Beaverton Symphony Orchestra welcomes the new year with a festive flourish

BEAVERTON, Oregon – The Beaverton Symphony Orchestra opens their Winter Concert with a fanfare—Svoboda’s Festive Overture and Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien—on January 20th and 22nd. These two pieces are sure to warm up the audience for the main event, Brahms’ Piano Concerto #2.

A tradition of Brahms

Loyal Beaverton Symphony audiences understand the orchestra’s love of Brahms, BSO performs at least one work by Brahms every season. With irresistible melodies provoking a range of emotions, the musicians love digging into the immense and ingenious motives hidden under the surface. Without a doubt the best way to experience Brahms is to see it live, especially the Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major. This special concerto has been described as “humankind at its most exalted”—worth remembering during difficult times.

Local Soloist shines

Beaverton Symphony welcomes piano soloist Susan DeWitt Smith to perform the Brahms Piano Concerto. A native of Portland, Oregon, Ms. Smith has an active career as both a soloist and chamber musician, performing with the Oregon Symphony, San Diego Symphony, and with members of the Julliard, Kronos, and Philadelphia string quartets. She earned her MM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Smith is a member of Portland’s Third Angle New Music Ensemble, and teaches at Lewis & Clark College.

Northwest Composers Project

Presentation of Thomas Svoboda’s Festive Overture is a continuation of the BSO’s commitment to showcase the work of living Northwest composers. A prolific Portland composer, Mr. Svoboda has had this overture heard throughout the world and now here in Beaverton. BSO Music Director Travis Hatton is an able judge of composition talent with a Bachelor of Music degree Magna Cum Laude in Music Theory and Composition from the University of the Pacific.

“It is essential we bring an increasing variety of new music to our growing audience,” says Maestro Travis Hatton.

The Beaverton Symphony Orchestra, in keeping with its mission to make classical music available to the broadest possible audience, offers a pre-concert talk by Maestro Hatton. These lively and informative discussions aid the inexperienced classical concert goer and enrich the experience of classical aficionados.
