DESCRIPTION:Beaverton Symphony Orchestra welcomes the new year with a festi
 ve flourish\n\nBEAVERTON\, Oregon – The Beaverton Symphony Orchestra ope
 ns their Winter Concert with a fanfare—Svoboda’s Festive Overture and 
 Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien—on January 20th and 22nd. These two pi
 eces are sure to warm up the audience for the main event\, Brahms’ Piano
  Concerto #2.\n\nA tradition of Brahms\n\nLoyal Beaverton Symphony audienc
 es understand the orchestra’s love of Brahms\, BSO performs at least one
  work by Brahms every season. With irresistible melodies provoking a range
  of emotions\, the musicians love digging into the immense and ingenious m
 otives hidden under the surface. Without a doubt the best way to experienc
 e Brahms is to see it live\, especially the Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat
  major. This special concerto has been described as “humankind at its mo
 st exalted”—worth remembering during difficult times.\n\nLocal Soloist
  shines\n\nBeaverton Symphony welcomes piano soloist Susan DeWitt Smith to
  perform the Brahms Piano Concerto. A native of Portland\, Oregon\, Ms. Sm
 ith has an active career as both a soloist and chamber musician\, performi
 ng with the Oregon Symphony\, San Diego Symphony\, and with members of the
  Julliard\, Kronos\, and Philadelphia string quartets. She earned her MM f
 rom the San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, and her Doctor of Musical Ar
 ts degree from the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Smith is a member of Portl
 and’s Third Angle New Music Ensemble\, and teaches at Lewis &amp\; Clark
  College.\n\nNorthwest Composers Project\n\nPresentation of Thomas Svoboda
 ’s Festive Overture is a continuation of the BSO’s commitment to showc
 ase the work of living Northwest composers. A prolific Portland composer\,
  Mr. Svoboda has had this overture heard throughout the world and now here
  in Beaverton. BSO Music Director Travis Hatton is an able judge of compos
 ition talent with a Bachelor of Music degree Magna Cum Laude in Music Theo
 ry and Composition from the University of the Pacific.\n\n“It is essenti
 al we bring an increasing variety of new music to our growing audience\,
 ” says Maestro Travis Hatton.\n\nThe Beaverton Symphony Orchestra\, in k
 eeping with its mission to make classical music available to the broadest 
 possible audience\, offers a pre-concert talk by Maestro Hatton. These liv
 ely and informative discussions aid the inexperienced classical concert go
